The publication has reviewed 80 Temecula wines over the past two years, and the results are in. Robert Renzoni Vineyards specializes in Sangiovese and Pinot Noirs, and the Renzoni family has been making wines for more than a century, starting in northern Italy and continuing today in Southern California. Its tasting room is reminiscent of a Tuscan villa and is one of the most picturesque spots in the region. Wiens Family Cellars arrived in Temecula 10 years ago and has one of the most diverse wine profiles in the area.
The company focuses primarily on red wines, producing more than 60 different varieties in the past year with the goal of creating “a different tasting room experience every time,” according to Wiens. They're open to trying out new styles of wine. Wiens also has a brewery on the other side of town. Imagine stepping out onto your private patio or balcony in the morning and seeing hot air balloons gliding over the mist-covered green vineyards of Temecula.
The region has seen a steady increase in tourism over the past six years, although there is no breakdown of total revenues earned by wineries. At one winery, you can even find a collection of motorcycles, Vespas, and memorabilia lovingly restored by an avid motocross family. Bolero, a Spanish winery, is home to Bolero Restaurante, led by executive chef Hany Ali. Ali was born in Egypt, trained in Switzerland, and has traveled to 28 countries while working in kitchens for Four Seasons Resorts.
Some locals believe that previous generations of winemakers lacked the experience needed to navigate their climate and terroir. Retired asset manager Sue Simmons from downtown Los Angeles recalled her reaction when friends gave her Temecula wines about five years ago. She said it wasn't a good region for wine at the time but she was always willing to try something new. In any wine region, the landscape will entice romantics to dream of living in a vineyard and bottling their own wines, and Temecula is no exception.
That's why wineries don't care if they make exceptional wine; there's no reason for them to make people happy and sell out.
